SIMULTANEOUS TRANSLATION - ENGLISH

The history of the English language may be divided into three periods – Old English, Middle English and Modern English.  It is part of a broad linguistic family known as the Indo-European languages.

Over time, English has suffered the influence of many other languages, such as when the Franco-Normans invaded England and French became the language used in court and government, when the language of the land was Old English. It went through a rigorous change of phonetics that Danish linguist Otto Jespersen called the “Great English Vowel Shift”, when the number of vowels went from the 20 in Middle English to 18 in Modern English.

The English language became more widespread in the 1500s.  As Great Britain, and then the US, became dominating powers, the language gained in importance and is currently the reference for all other languages.

English is the official language for over 330 million people, and the second language for over 200 million.  It is the common language of trade, industry, science and politics.
