Spanish or Castilian is a romance language originating in Spain. Romance or Latin languages are a group of Indo-European languages that evolved from Latin.
Castilian originates from Castela, the castle region in Spain. The Spanish language can be divided into Medieval or Old Spanish, Modern Spanish and Contemporary Spanish, which started with the creation of the Royal Spanish Academy and continues evolving to this day.
Some two hundred and fifty million people worldwide speak Spanish. It is variably listed as the second, third or fourth most spoken language, yet it clearly is second in importance only to English. It is spoken on six continents, almost in some cases only residually.
